HL Hamburger Leistungsfutter GmbH uses special products

At the oft-cited "Gate to the World" in Hamburg, the traditional company HL Hamburger Leistungsfutter GmbH HL Hamburger Leistungsfutter GmbH , which was founded in 1878, today has its headquarters in a modern mixed feed plant, which gets its charm from the old red brick building erected in the 1920s.

Goods-in, production, storage, offices, packaging and loading all take place on the 3.5-hectare site. "It is compact, but it works," says Tomasz Wasik. Together with Heinz Daske and Dr. Jens Reimann, he manages HL, an associated company of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG.

Changing location because of the limited space is absolutely inconceivable for all three men – and for all the other employees as well. Afterall, HL Hamburger Leistungsfutter is not only firmly linked to the Hanseatioc City in northern Germany because of its name. "We have a direct water connection and the direct proximity of the Hamburger Port," explains Wasik. As a result, the location is ideal for exports, which now comprise a very large proportion. HL products are known in more than 40 countries around the world. The special products in particular are in great demand at home and abroad – from neighbouring Poland to Saudi Arabia and the Far East.

100,000 tonnes of special feed a year - and rising

Since the end of the 1980s, the company has also been working on the production, among other things, of Special feed products Special feed products . A scientific department with six employees, working with field sales and product management, ensures there are always new ideas and incentives. Field sales is given extra training in order to be able to present the advice-intensive products at farms. "The consultation not only concerns the products, but also herd management, animal husbandry, hygiene hygiene and all other procedures, which are relevant for the farms" adds Dr. Jens Reimann. The commitment is worth it: In 2014 HL manufactured 100,000 tonnes of special feed – and rising. As a result, the cooperation with Genossenschafts-Kraftfutterwerk GmbHm Brunswick – a subsidiary of AGRAVIS – is becoming more intensive, in order to be able to cope with the demand.

Specialist for raw material processing

Another feature of the Hamburg company is raw material processing. "We have developed a special hydrothermic process, the Wisan process," explains Reimann. The careful treatment activates nutritive substances, such as the slime-forming substances in the linseed of Wisan flax. At the same time, however, antinutritive components are made inactive. An example of this is the prevention of the enzyme linamarase, which is responsible for the formation of prussic acid in linseed. Other substance groups are affected sauch that the protein digestion in rumens is altered. As a result of the process, Wisan rapeseed has a raw protein potential of more than 60 percent. Normal rapeseed meal, on the other hand, has 30 to 35 percent. The Wisan rapeseed also differs greatly in terms of water retention from rapeseed meal: 2.5 timws its own weight compared to once its own weight.

"By using these treated raw materials in the feed, it is possible for us to improve animal health and to have a positive impact on their diet," says Tomasz Wasik. The Wisan products are not only for conventional agriculture either, but are also suitable for farms that exclusively work with non-genetically modified raw materials. In addition, because of the high protein content they are also an alternative to imported soya meal. "Farms' demands are growing, and we have to react to them," say Reimann and Wasik.
