Biogas plant Dorsten: the minister of agriculture acquaints himself with nutrient concept
How can liquid manure be prepared? Where can it be profitably used? What can actively be done to reduce the excess of nutrients in the animal husbandry regions? These are only some of the questions, Johannes Remmel, Minister for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia asked during his visit in Dorsten – and to which he received the answers.

- On Friday morning, the Minister of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Remmel (centre) visited the biogas plant of TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH in Dorsten. Dr. Philipp Spinne and Steffen Schirmacher-Rohleder (from the right), directors of TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH and its partner company ODAS GmbH, received the minister and his member of staff Klaus Dörr together with Bernd Homann, Corporate Communications Manager of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG and explained the innovative nutrient utilisation concept.
Remmel visited the biogas system of TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH – an associated company of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG and the ODAS Group – and acquainted himself with the innovative concept used to manage the system since March 2014 during his look behind the scenes. "The subject of nutrient management presents an ever growing challenge to agriculture – especially in regions such as the southern region of Münster and the northern Ruhr district", said minister on site. Dr. Philipp Spinne and Steffen Schirmacher-Rohleder, directors of TerraSol Wirtschaftsdünger GmbH and its partner company ODAS GmbH, received the minister and introduced him to the holistic approach for the utilisation of surplus commercial fertilisers both in theoretical and practical terms.
Individual solutions following stocktaking
In the course of this, Steffen Schirmacher-Rohleder emphasised that the first step always was a comprehensive stocktaking of the farm's situation in order to determine an individual solution: "Only after a detailed analysis of the problem will it be decided how much liquid manure or dung will leave the farm and in which manner before it is for instance used in the biogas plant in Dorsten for the production of energy." Following processing at the biogas plant, the fermentation residues are transported to the farming regions.
Dr. Philipp Spinne introduced the processes and mode of operation of the biogas plant. He explained that it was not a question of operating a biogas plant for the purpose of power generation, but to operate a plant for the sensible utilisation of nutrients: "According to our approach, the plant is to run with a commercial fertiliser share of 80 percent. At full-load operation, we want to feed in 700 standard cubic meters of biomethane per hour and also produce 500 kilowatts of electricity on an annual average with our combined heat and power units".
Minister Remmel was visibly impressed by the new approach: "The problem of excess nutrients is nothing new, therefore it is important that innovative approaches are found that achieve benefit and added value for both sides." This is what had happened at the biogas plant in Dorsten. However, the agricultural minister basically continues to be of the opinion that in future, agricultural operations should not produce more liquid manure than they require to meet their own nutrient requirements. For this, it is now necessary to set the course for a long-term development of animal husbandry.
