Organic feed production: Entry into a new market

Raiffeisen Hohe Mark Hamaland eG Raiffeisen Hohe Mark Hamaland eG (RHMH) and AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG plan to switch their feedstuff production feedstuff production to the manufacture of organic feeds at a shared site in Gescher. “By doing so we are responding to the increased demand for organic feeds in our region,” explains Martin Duesmann-Artmann, Managing Director of Raiffeisen Hohe Mark Hamaland eG, and Sönke Voss, Feedstuff Manager of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG.

Both companies have been strengthening their cooperation in the feedstuff market in Westphalia since 2014 and recently set up a joint venture called BioMühle Hamaland GmbH. The production and sales company, managed by Martin Duesmann-Artmann and Markus Posielek, supplies farmers with all their organic feed related needs. The market and the precise prerequisites for producing organic feeds at the chosen site have already been analysed. Both managing directors reckon that “There is a manageable, sustainable market that is slowly growing in line with current nutrition trends.”

Taking responsibility as a full-liner

Until now, the feedstuff plant in Gescher has been producing around 45,000 tonnes of feed per year – 75% is pig feed and the rest is feed for cows. Legacy operations have now been discontinued and the plant is currently being prepared to produce organic feeds for pigs, cows and poultry. “We see ourselves as a full-liner and therefore accept a responsibility to offer our farmers in the region, who have been working in accordance with ecological guidelines for many years, compound feed concepts,” explain Duesmann-Artmann and Posielek. Gescher will be manufacturing organic feeds exclusively from mid March onwards. Besides loose goods, the product range will possibly include organic feed quality sacked goods that will be will distributed nationally.

Services provided from Gescher will be maintained

There will be no change in the range of services hitherto delivered from Gescher. “The full scope of the familiar service portfolio we provide to our customers will be preserved. Previous compound feed business will be handled by our plants in Lembeck, Wesel and Dorsten,” promises Martin Duesmann-Artmann. “Our future organic feed offering will actively secure the future and meet our farmers’ needs.”

The strategic alliance between Raiffeisen Hohe Mark Hamaland eG and AGRAVIS to produce organic feeds will enable both partners to gain entry into a new segment.
