Feed strategies for own mixtures

The use offeed concepts feed concepts with greatly reduced N and P levels mean that the space required or the provision of liquid manure is reduced considerably, especially when fattening pigs. This is based on a four-phase feed. For many self-mixing pig fattening operations, one question has to be asked: How can this feed concept be implemented in own mixtures for fattening?

For this reason, AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG has revised the Fisopan supplement feed programme. “The most important aspect is, and remains, the output and health of the animals,” explains Bernhard Walgern, product manager at AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG. Several important points must be borne in mind in this case. “On the one hand, adequate supply of precaecal digestible amino acids and digestible phosphorus must be ensured, on the other hand the mixtures that are used should correspond to the maximum content of raw protein and phosphorus,” says the expert.

Analysis of grain produced on the farm is a basic prerequisite

The grain produced on the farm is of major importance for the exact composition of rations alongside the correct supplement feed. For example, the raw protein contents vary in wheat between 7.4 and 14.5 percent (average value 10.3 percent) according to LUFA North-Rhine Westphalia. When using 75 percent of grain produced on the farm, and a feed calculation based on an average value then a deviation of 3 percent from the average causes an effect of more than 2 percent less or more raw protein content in the trough than is illustrated on the feed calculation. This can lead to inadequate provision for animals, or an overly high raw protein content for the feed with strongly reduced N and P content. “For this reason analysis of grain produced on the farm is a basic prerequisite, especially for a feed with strongly reduced N and P content,” explains the AGRAVIS product manager.

Operative conditions determine the mixture

The mixture produced on the farm must be perfectly aligned to operative conditions. “What is clear is that this is not doable with only a supplement feed or mineral feed. In this case it would be either that the nutritional value of the pre-fattening feed was too low, or was too high in the withdrawal feed,” says Walgern. The new Fisopan programme provides types aligned precisely to the respective fattening stage for the various phases. “If there is inadequate silo capacity, then the number of types can be reduced down to two through combined usage,” explains the specialist.

The enzyme phytase improves digestibility

The foundation for the new Fisopan concept is the selection of the “ideal protein” in the various fattening stages whilst taking the nine most important digestible amino acids into consideration. “The AGRAVIS advisers can carry out the mixing calculation based on net energy. This means that, particularly with rations with heavily reduced raw protein content, more precise energy supply can be provided. Incidentally, the supply of raw fibre is easier to ensure,” explains Walgern. Evaluation according to digestible phosphorus is the means of choice for adequate provision of minerals to animals. The digestibility of the phosphorus contained in the vegetable raw materials is improved by correspondingly adding the enzyme phytase. The content of mineral phosphorus and total phosphorus can therefore be reduced. It is important to take the correct calcium-phosphorus ratio into account.

The Fisopan concept will be available from the middle of May onwards

Usually, lowering the content of raw protein also changes the electrolyte balance in the feed. However, this is important for sufficient bone mineralisation. “The necessary electrolyte balance is provided at a corresponding level in the Fisopan supplement feeds,” states Walgern. Individual calculation of own mixtures as well as establishing the space required for liquid manure on various feed concepts by the AGRAVIS production advisor is an important service for successfully implementing feed with strongly reduced levels of N and P. Alongside special Fisopan supplement feeds, AGRAVIS also provides corresponding VitaMiral mineral feeds for own mixtures that allow for provision of pig feed with strongly reduced levels of N and P. The revised Fisopan concept for pig feed with strongly reduced levels of N and P is available from mid-May 2016.
