AGRAVIS's strategy is nipping the danger of salmonellas in the bud

Salmonellas are highly resistent bacteria that can be found almost anywhere. That's why they can survive in dust at at ambient temperatures for as much as four years. Pigs are primarily infected with salmonellas orally from faecal matter, rodents or germs circulating in the stock. We give helpful hints on how to combat them.

Under physiological circumstances, the pig has an anaerobic intestinal millieu that protects the intestinal flora and reduces the spread of pathogenic germs such as salmonellas. An antibiotic treatment frequently has a negative impact on the pig's gastro-intestinal flora. Studies show that animals treated with antibiotics are much more receptive to an infection with salmonellas than animals without this treatment.

The consumption of antibiotics can be sustainably reduced by inoculation in operations with the ileitis pathogen in their stocks. Logically, this has a favourable impact on the intestinal flora. Inoculation drives down the rate of infection so that an antibiotic therapy is not even necessary in a case such as this. The salmonella status of the operation is playing an increasingly important role when marketing pigs. The reason is the zoonotic potential of individual salmonella strains. They can cause the disease to take a serious turn among people.

The salmonella status of a pork operation is indirectly determined by the proof of salmonella antibodies and it is described by the parameters of optical density (OD). Antibodies are routinely detected with slaughter pigs in a defined number of samples per operation and year at the slaughter belt. Along with sampling the meat juices, there is also the option of detecting antibodies on the living animal by examining its blood.

This interprets the laboratory findings according to QS as follows: Any reading to OD 39 characterises negative findings while a reading of OD 40 and more is favourable. Then, the supplying operation is divided up into categories I, II or III on the relative proportion of favourable findings in the total scope of sampling. Category II operations – about one fifth of the QS operations – should take immediate action to drive down salmonellas and avoid slipping into category III. Operations in this category have to report their categorisation to the veterinary office within two weeks and take steps to reduce the salmonella entry together with the farm veterinary doctor or pork health board.

The occurrence of salmonellas is a multi-factor phenomenon that can have a whole series of causes. In any event, it is imperative to do thorough-going in-and-out cleansing and disinfection of the stalls which this calls for pigs of various age groups to be housed in separate stalls. After all, the results of effective stall disinfection depends greatly on good cleansing.

Ideally, you should use a foamy alkaline floor cleanser when cleansing the stall floors such as Desintec StallClean Basis. It reliably removes grease und protein residues from feed and faecal matter. Dust on the window benches and ventilation shafts and residues of dirt on the troughs and pen separators make it difficult to effectively reduce salmonellas.

In any event, these areas should be painstakingly cleansed and disinfected at regular intervals including hallways, forage kitchens and loading ramps. The standard disinfectants listed by DVG are Desintec FL from GA forte and Desintec Peroxx liquid and they reliably disinfect salmonellas. Desintec FL-des Allround is recommended if it is necessary to have both antimicrobial disinfection (such as against salmonellas) and antiparasitic disinfection against worm eggs in the operation .

Beyond this, it is important to concentrate on fighting insects and pests. These sources of salmonella infections have to be combated with well thought-out methods. Combating larvae and flies in combination is the only promising means of combating flies. Alzogur can be used against the eggs and larvae of the flies if the stall is still empty. Larvicides such as Desintec LarvEx are used when the stall is occupied A larvicide should be applied on the entire breeding areas for the flies. Special products are recommended for combating adult flies that is either applied to or sprayed onto surfaces .

The first thing for effectively combating rodents is inspecting the operation with an expert. Then a decision should be taken as to whether the agriculturist should combat these rodents by him-/herself on a regular basis or hire a professional pest control company.

Essential factors in preserving any stock of animals not suspected of salmonellas are strictly complying with the hygiene management programme and the reference to purchased animals that tested negative for salmonellas. Experience shows that the most promising combination is close collaboration with the salesperson and purchaser while maintaining a dialog with the veterinary doctor for the animal stock. In general, the intestine is looked upon as the animal's largest immunological organ and

this view emphasises the fact that a healthy feed intestine is another cornerstone in effectively reducing salmonellas. But, more than anything else, using feed acids in portioning rations has established itself in practical operations together with a management programme initiated for improving the status in salmonellas monitoring. Using feed acids not only has anti-microbial effects by reducing the pH-value in the digestive system. Coincidentally, it also has a positive impact on protein digestibility and therefore the pig's utilisation of its feed.

The supplementary feed Miravit L-cid Standard is a liquid mixed acid product that can be offered to animals both in drinking water and liquid feed. As a free-flowing dry acid, Miravit LactAcid is the right product for operations that would like to use mixed acid in dry feed.

The common denominator of both products is the fact that they are extremely effective in reducing the pH-value and very tasty due to its special recipe. Add to this is its user-friendliness and excluding all documentation obligations (the HACCP strategy). In contrast, there are documentation obligations when using monoacids. Studies at the Hannover Veterinary College in Germany prove that the feed structure and more coarsely crushed feed can have a beneficial effect on the animal's gastro-intestinal-health and the prevalence of salmonellas.

AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG applied this insight to the special Olympig sole food and Fisopan supplementary feed recipes. They are produced in a special structural milling, are well equipped with acid and crude fibre and provide sustainably beneficial support to the animal's intestinal flora.

We can explain why the crude fibre has a beneficial impact on the salmonella phenomenon as follows: volatile fatty acids are formed if the animal has sufficient substances that can be fermented with bacteria in its large intestine. In turn, they provide animals with natural protection and make it more difficult for dangerous bacteria to climb up from the rear section of the intestine.
