AGRAVIS Raiffeisen's crop farming app IQ-Plant IQ-Plant has been on the market for well over a year now. Farmers can download it onto their smartphones free of charge and receive regular, important and up-to-date tips on crop farming crop farming plus date reminders. Astrid Manns from the plant cultivation consultancy of AGRAVIS Raiffeisen AG, co-developed the app and is happy about the digital success story.

Ms Manns, what is the original idea behind IQ-Plant? Why has AGRAVIS decided on this path of information transmission?

Astrid Manns: In order to be successful as an agriculturist today it is essential to be up to date at all times. The agriculturist receives a flood of information from the industry, growers, experts and colleagues. It is important to separate what is truly important for the operation from the rest.

The crop cultivation experts of AGRAVIS view, check and assess this flood of information on a daily basis and select competently. Where general information is not sufficient, they supplement it specifically with own, praxis-relevant research results and own experiences.

This app is ideal to provide the agriculturist with the selected information on time, brief and concise: Most carry the Smartphone with them at all times; when a new message has been received, a short message is displayed and there is the option to reach the local expert at the agricultural cooperative society in case of queries.

Which information does the agriculturist receive and how are these processed so they can be implemented directly from the Smartphone?

Astrid Manns: The agriculturist receives tips for his cultures pertaining to the selection of the variety to fertilisation through to plant protection and storage. At the establishment of these tips, our experts use current forecast models, weather data and current experiences from the hotline and from field inspections in order to quickly and precisely react to current events, such as e.g. barley strip rust. The IQ-Plant messages consist of texts, pictures and clearly arranged graphics, everything optimised to be viewed on a Smartphone or tablet.

What is the feedback from the agriculturists? How many agriculturists already have IQ-Plant on their mobile?

Astrid Manns: The feedback from the agriculturists to IQ-Plant are consistently positive. Clarity, practical relevance and the fact that the tips are free of charge are being praised. Only some Smartphone or tablet types experienced technical problems. Now, we have more than 17,000 downloads from the stores - a good response which shows that the app is accepted.

The app is now one year old – what is to happen next for IQ-Plant? What ideas are there for the future, what areas are to be extended?

Astrid Manns: We are currently working on an improvement of the downloading behaviour of the app. The large amount of information that is received over the year presents a challenge for data transfer. We will also include information related to agricultural technology, in addition to the existing information; AGRAVIS has a number of experts on this too. We have had a lot of ideas for the future. However, we are taking care that we stay close to the original nucleus of IQ-Plant: timely, reliable plant cultivation tips from pros for pros, as concise and clear as possible. And always with the possibility of calling the consultant directly on-site.
